Thoughts and musings of an old codger.

From Chester to Wales.   - Saturday 13/7/24

Chester, fashion capitol of the Northeast, or so it seemed as we alighted the park and ride bus in the city centre. There were lots of people about, which is not unusual for a saturdy, but a high proportion of them were all dressed up. Must be a wedding somewhere we assumed.
We really liked the city of Chester. There are some fantastic old Tudor buildings, interesting side streets, traditional 'old english' pubs, and of course, its cathedral.

As we wandered around The Rows, a kind of medieval two tier shopping arcade, we saw many more people all dressed up. As this was some time later, and some way further, we dismissed the wedding idea as the people were just too spread out, and not going in any particular direction. By now it was well after lunchtime, and several of these dedicated fashion followers were now in and out of the pubs getting tanked up. It was quite fascinating people watching from our pavement cafe while we had our afternoon coffee.

It wasn't until we returned back home and I spoke about this in the local pub that someone informed me it was probably race day, and the racecourse is very close to the city. I'd completely overlooked the fact Chester has a racecourse!

In the afternoon we headed off for North Wales. Its a fairly straight run from Chester down the A55, known as the North Wales Expressway. It probably explains why there seem to be so many people in North Wales with Liverpudlian accents.
We stopped in Colwyn Bay for a coffee and then went up to Llandudno for a while, before returning through Conwy to our stop for the night.

We were staying at The Old Stag, a pub in a village called Llangernyw. We have stayed here before, and it is a great old friendly country pub, with good food, good beer and stacks of memorabelia all over the walls and ceilings.
