Somerset to Wales - Friday 11-8-2023
For our last trip of the year, met up with family in Somerset then onward for a week in Wales.
At our meet up in Dorset with Alex and Keeley, before we departed for Scotland, they were sleeping in a tent with 4 year old twin boys.
With all the kit they have to lug around just for the boys, there was not much room left in the car for camping equipment.
I think it was then they decided a campervan would be
the better option and since then they have now bought one.
We decided to meet up for the weekend around half distance from our homes, so picked a campsite near Wells in Somerset. We broke the journey halfway, staying at a pubstop at Chippenham and next day spent a few hours walking around Royal Wooton Basset, before heading for the campsite.
Some time later, the others arrived in their new [to them] bright purple VW campervan. Naturally, they had christened it "Prince".
The next day we visited Wells, alledgedly the smallest city in England [not counting 'The City of London'].
Wells turned out to be a really nice place to visit, with lots to do and see.
The Bishops Palace is more like a castle, with its surrounding moat, hosting numerous ducks and swans.
The local pigeons have become amazingly tame,
mostly due to the market stalls selling bird food for the tourists to feed them.
The twins must have got through three or four bags, and had a great time feeding the birds.
The Cathedral is a magnificent building, with ornate stonework featuring over 50 statues built into the facade. On close inspection many have been damaged, apparently by parlimentarian troops using them for target practice during the English Civil War.
It was market day when we visited, and there were lots of interesting stalls ranging from bric a brac to specialist food and drink, and many street food vendors.
